Hula Juice Cafe
That type of score is hard won and difficult to award. It denotes excellence in a number of categories, a description that aptly fits Hula. When they undertook a fairly comprehensive refit and significant menu overhaul, a couple of months back, it felt like a re-review wasn’t far away.
I popped in for breakfast as over the years this has become my most frequent visiting hour. It was lovely to see owner Susan behind the counter making espresso to her usual excellent standard.
The recent refurbishment has seen things retain the tiki feel – and delicious juices remain to the fore – but there’s a stronger sense of informal elegance. It feels just a wee bit more grown-up, I guess.
I was caught in two minds as to what to order so sought advice from my smiley waitress. She recommended the avocado sourdough toast with bacon. That sounded about right to me.
Despite brisk morning trade my item was soon with me, along with the previously mentioned excellent espresso.
Aside from looking incredibly bonnie with very neat slicing of the avocado, the aroma was fantastic. I tucked in with relish.
Topped with a mix of seeds and spicing, this was an absolutely first-rate dish. It was brimming with flavour, the bacon was superbly crisped, the toast spot-on and the avocado beautifully ripe.
As I’ve mentioned before, we’re very close to “peak avocado” in Edinburgh at the moment, but this was a splendid dish to sit atop the summit.
So overall, I’m very happy to endorse and continue Hula’s rating at the dizzying heights of 18.5/20. It remains one of my favourite places in the city and I’d highly recommend that you give it a visit, particularly if you haven’t popped-in in a while as their new menu and look is worthy of your immediate attention.
