It was good to renew acquaintances with the Waverley Station market after a little gap in visits. It seems to have maintained a steady trade without ever really catching fire and drawing in punters in their droves.
Bakery Andante was a stall I’d spied before, and I’d strolled past their Morningside shop many times. I hadn’t previously noticed that they did toasties, though. Keen to sample their impressive sounding bread, I ordered a toastie with Isle of Mull cheddar and red onion marmalade (£4.75).
The friendly stallholder was quickly about the task of preparing things while I tried to resist buying fougasse to eat later.
The toastie was soon with me, carefully wrapped, with additional napkins sensibly provided.
Finding a nearby table free, I sat down to munch. I was very pleased with what I chewed as the bread was excellent and very nicely toasted. The balance of the filling could have been better as there seemed to be as much onion and cheese, which didn’t feel quite right, but it was delicious nevertheless.
So overall, with a little less onion and a little more cheese, the toastie from Bakery Andante would be challenging for five stars. As it is, it offered a very solid four star display, built around really pleasing bread, providing me with an enjoyable lunchtime bite. Give them a visit soon.
