Raclette and Coffee Wee Red Box
I’ve never been much of a fan of the Wee Red Box coffee police boxes, which have traded at various outlets over the years as I’ve routinely found their coffee disappointing.
However, I was intrigued to notice that the three at different corners of George Square now offered different styles of cheesy snacks. One does grilled cheese, one has a pizza oven, and one offers raclette. I visited the latter, today, which was just next to On the Roll and along from Dumbo.
Sporting a traditional swing raclette grill, the folks in the box were soon about preparing a sourdough caramelised onion and chorizo toast (£4) which would then be smothered in the delicious cheese.
On possibly the most tepid hot plate in history, chunks of chorizo were tortuously toasted alongside the bread, then onion marmalade spread on the toast. The gooey cheesy topped things off.
It proved good eating with really tasty cheese, but it was a little on the small side. I could have happily eaten two.
So overall, it was good to discover a raclette purveyor in Edinburgh. I look forward to giving the other Wee Red Box cheese delights a try over the coming days and weeks.
