I’m currently doing a Step Count Challenge with some work colleagues so I’ve been looking to stretch the walk to work to pad-out my stats. On one such slightly loopy route, I came across DeLekt on Lauriston Place so stopped in for breakfast sustenance.

Where Gordon’s, Contino and latterly Nice One! have previously traded, this has been a slightly tricky spot to get right over the years, with regular changes of ownership.

From first crossing the threshold, it was clear that this is comfortably the best iteration we’ve yet seen. The interior is very smart with mismatched small tables, good quality produce dotted about the place, and a really welcoming feel. I was impressed.

The friendly counter man said that they did a deal for a breakfast roll and coffee for £3.50. That sounded good to me so I ordered a bacon roll and an espresso. I had time for the coffee in a proper cup while the roll was prepared to order.

The espresso was probably the best Union Hand Roasted I’ve had in the city. It’s a coffee that I’m sure is very good but I’ve rarely found well-prepared so it was good to sample it in a very good state.

With the bacon roll ready, I stepped back on my way eating as I clocked up numbers.

The roll proved to be really good with profuse back bacon on a soft and floury roll. The fat could have been crisper but this was a minor niggle with what was a very good item.

So overall, DeLekt has a strong chance to succeed in a venue that has proved challenging. I’ll definitely be back to try something from their lunchtime sandwich selection. Make sure to stop in next time you’re in the neighbourhood.
