I’d had Blythswood Square on my list for a visit for a good wee while. Sister hotel of the excellent Bonham in Edinburgh, I’d popped in for drinks a couple of times, but hadn’t had the chance to check out their restaurant until now.
I was joined today by regular guest quester Tim and first-timer Ian. Ian was recently awarded the OBE so is possibly the fanciest person we’ve had along on quests, to date.
I was first to arrive and was seated at a smart, if slightly wobbly table, in their super-stylish dining room. It really is a very elegant spot.
We opted for dishes from their market menu which offers two courses for £18 and three for £22. I asked whether they wouldn’t mind swapping in the white onion soup from the a la carte as I’m not the hugest fan of carrot and coriander. They were more than happy to do this.
So, I started with that soup then followed with the steak frites, which attracted a £5 supplement. Ian started with the chicken liver parfait then followed with the seared chicken breast, while Tim chose the fillet of smoked haddock then the squash and wild mushrooms tart.
Starters were promptly delivered with Ian’s looking particularly eye-catching. Mine was rather plainer by comparison. The soup was very well judged and richly savoury. There were nods of approval around the table.
Main courses maintained a similarly impressively standard. Tim was slightly concerned about the firmness of his squash cubes, but was otherwise content. Ian’s mash looked particularly good.
My steak, cooked on their Josper grill, was really pleasing, as were accompanying skinny fries. They were rather better than the twice-cooked chips, which we’d added as a sharing side dish.
We rounded things out with pretty good coffee and were left to reflect on a very enjoyable lunchtime interlude.
So overall, Blythswood Square was really rather impressive. It was good to have such convivial company for a trip to this high quality establishment. I look forward to visiting again and would recommend you do likewise.
