I read a very positive assessment of the coffee at Lucano’s Kitchen, on Twitter the other day, which prompted me to visit and check it out. I’d popped in previously for espresso and not been impressed, so wondered whether there had been a change in direction since their little name change from Caffe Lucano.

I visited at breakfast time so my food requirement was quite simple: a bacon roll. I added an espresso.

The place is quite a smart cafe premises with a counter offering a selection of savoury and sweet options. Their menu has a large range of items with an extensive array of pasta dishes. I sat at one of their shelf seats at the window so I could watch the world go by as I ate.

First up was the espresso, which was just as mediocre as I remembered from the previous visit.

The bacon roll was rather better, but the roll was a bit too crisp for my liking. The bacon was tasty and the brown sauce, served in a neat little Kilner jar, was good.

So overall, Lucano’s Kitchen seems to be doing a reasonable job, but didn’t hugely impress me. It is quite focussed on the tourist market but given its location that’s not entirely surprising. I’m not sure I saw enough from today’s visit to make me want to return and pay around a tenner to try one of their pasta dishes.
