There were a mix of familiar faces (lovely to see Knight’s Kitchen, again) and stalls that were new to me. In the latter camp was Blue Banana, showcasing Caribbean cuisine.
With some tempting looking chicken on the grill, my eye was got by a bright hotpot (£3 per portion) bubbling away. I checked with the friendly stallholder who told me it was a Caribbean style curry featuring sweet potatoes, served with a little coconut rice and topped with some crunchy vegetables. This sounded good to me.With photos snapped, I tucked in. It proved an enjoyable eat with a good balance of sweet and spice. It had a good variety of textures. The rice was a little under-seasoned for my tastes, but I was happy with the dishes warming effects on what was an intermittently chilly day.
So overall, Blue Banana is producing pleasing fare. I must come back and try their chicken as I have a feeling that this is where their real strength lies. I look forward to visiting the market again, soon, as it’s doing an excellent job in bringing people to the Grassmarket area on a Saturday afternoon.
