From re-reading the review, I must have been in a really shitty mood the day I first went to visit BBL (Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch), on the Pleasance. I made a rather grudging mention that their burgers and sausages might merit further attention. After a couple of stops in the neighbourhood on Scran Salon business, I popped in to give the place a second try.
I focussed on their burgers, which are homemade and come in a good range of size and topping options. I opted for their ¼ pounder cheeseburger topped with haggis. This came in at a very reasonable £4.60.
The service is a little quirky with three counter women looking after things. I’m not sure things were handled quite as efficiently as they could have been, but the welcome was full of warmth.
With transactions completed I toddled off down the road. Opening the burger box, it looked like eating on the go might be a considerable challenge as the beast was enormous. I manfully grabbed at it and shoved it faceward, though.
Put simply, it was the best burger I’ve eaten in the city. Put a little more convolutedly, the burger was meaty and juicy, the haggis brought its joyful peppery goodness to proceedings, salad was crisp and fresh, and the bun maintained good integrity in the face of being overstuffed.
I thought the place was pretty unremarkable on my first visit, but it’s clear that in their burgers they have a massively impressive product. I wouldn’t be surprised to find that their sausages, especially the really tempting sounding veggie ones, are excellent too.
So overall, largely ignore my grumpy musings of before on the subject of BBL. Go and sample their excellent burgers at your earliest convenient opportunity. I’m confident you’ll be mightily impressed.
