Our current crop of Festival pop-ups is a good blend between locals and visitors. Representing the locals we have places like Hula, Castello, Urban Angel, Brew Lab, Khushi’s, and today’s chosen lunch spot, La Favorita.
From their Leith Walk premises, they’ve built a reputation as one of Edinburgh’s premier pizza purveyors, and they’ve long been a favourite with me, if you pardon the pun.
Their pizza van has made regular appearances at events, over the past couple of years, and has taken up residence on the Royal Mile, for this August.
Just outside the newly refurbished Tron Kirk, and near to the city’s busiest street theatre spot, it’s a bustling part of the world, so business will be brisk. I visited for a very late lunch, today, so caught them in a rare lull.
Continuing my pursuit of healthy food excellence, I opted for the veggie pizza slice (£3.50), which featured mushrooms, black olives, red onions and red peppers.
It was a really good slice of freshly made pie, and while the topping was relatively simple, the base was excellently judged, lending itself well to folding, for mess-free eating.
For those uninitiated in the ways of La Favorita, it will provide a tempting morsel that may compel them to visit their Leith shop (or one of their takeout/delivery places) for the full experience. For those more familiar with their offering, it bears a strong resemblance to the pizzas prepared at the restaurant, so is definitely worth sampling, when hunger hits.
It will be interesting to see how it stacks up to the pizza place that’s popped-up on George Square, so I look forward to finding out, in the next few days and weeks.
La Favorita is glorious! The more outlets the better.
Agreed!
