I usually manage to arrange my day so that lunchtime is leisurely and relaxed. Today, I ended up very pressed for time, so was in need of something “quick and dirty”. My needs were met by Yum Yum, a little takeout place on Fleshmarket Close.

Serving all your late night, post-pub needs, with pizza, kebab, chips and so on, it’s open for daytime service, too. I was in the market for something that could be quickly prepared and leant itself, at least in some measure, to eating as I walked, preferably in a manner that didn’t absolutely mandate another ruined tie.

Their lamb shawarma sounded like the best option. The efficient counter man set about assembling the wrap, with generous amounts of salad heaped on, “elephant’s leg” lamb donner piled in, then things topped off with garlic and chilli sauce. It was then lightly toasted, wrapped in a bag, and I was on my way.

I ate as I walked, and was pleased with the monster wrap. The casing was quite soft and thick, which worked well for my needs. It soaked up the potential drips of moisture of the filling well, ensuring my outfit remained neat and tidy.

The filling was tasty, with a good blend of textures. I know it’s not to everyone’s taste, but as long as donner meat is kept moist, I find it rather enjoyable. This version hit the spot very nicely, and the chilli sauce and jalapenos kept things palette-tinglingly interesting.

So overall, as a quick bite on the run, Yum Yum served me a really hearty and filling lunch, in quick smart fashion. The wrap wasn’t of the quality of Palmyra or Mediterranean Gate, but it did the job very nicely. Next time I’m in need of a fast lunch nosh, I’d happily return here.
