Some quests aren’t really about the food, but are simply about enjoying the moment, appreciating the great interaction with people as they go about their everyday business, and the fun and laughter that can be shared to make the day just a little bit brighter. My visit to Scooby’s Sandwiches, on Morrison Street, was one of those sort.

The staff behind the counter at Scooby’s are doing magnificent work, in terms of the care and attention they’re putting in to valuing their customers, dealing with things really efficiently, and keeping things light and jolly.

For example, the chap in front of me in the queue, today, a tourist visiting our fair city, was given excellently welcoming service. He’d been in the previous day, so wanted what he’d had then, which the counter man correctly remembered was a haggis and fried egg roll. Today he wanted it with a “little twist”, which came in the shape of brown sauce, which he’d never tried before. It was a small detail, but it was handled so smartly.

The coffee-making counter man also rewarded the tourist with a “cake surprise”, in the shape of a baked chocolate raisin fudge bar, then announced that everyone got “cake surprise” today, to thank everyone for years of loyal custom.

There wasn’t a person in the shop who didn’t leave with a big grin on their face, after these little rays of sunshine had brightened their day. I loved it.

As it goes, the food that I had wasn’t terribly good, with the black pudding on my roll a little spongey in texture and not altogether satisfying. The espresso wasn’t all that great, either. The “cake surprise” was very tasty, though.

I imagine that their sandwiches are good, as the deli counter looked quite impressive, and the queue of customers likely indicated that some decent offerings are available. But I was so charmed by the service that I really didn’t care that their food didn’t hit the spot, as the experience was delightful, in the final reckoning.

So overall, go and bask in the hilarious fun that is Scooby’s Sandwiches. Order differently from how I did, for sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to find that they serve some hearty and tasty grub on offer. I really enjoyed my visit, and will definitely be back again in the future.
