I’d heard good things about Rotato, not least that it had an excellently descriptive name, which it does. It serves rotisserie cooked tatties, you see: rotating potatoes!

Located in a little basement beneath Press Coffee, it’s in the heart of student land, but with prices just a little higher than your average baked potato joint, it’s probably aimed at the post-doctorals, staff, and the students that were called “yahs” in my day, but I believe are now referred to as “Tarquins”.

I was very pleased to see a potato called a “healthy beast” on the menu. It involved hummus and roast veg, topped with rocket, so I promptly placed my order with the efficient counter man.

Having taken a seat at one of the ten or so shelf seats, my potato was soon with me, looking about as bonnie as a baked spud could (ie not all that bonnie). This was not before I’d had a chance to scan the surroundings, which were very cool, with arty little sketches, in the comic book style, bedecking the walls. It was a properly stylish little basement hideaway.

What was immediately apparent was that this rotisserie approach had one major advantage on your average tattie purveyor, namely that the skin of the beast was superbly crispy.

Mr Potato heads!

Mr Potato heads!

The filling’s slight initial chill wasn’t so thrilling, but once the heat had radiated throughout, things were all good.

The rocket provided good peppery greenery, while the peppers and mushrooms played an excellent role in providing the healthy backbone of the dish. The potato itself was utterly satisfying, with lovely interior lightness melding well with the filling, then the crispy shell hitting all the right notes.

So overall, I was really impressed with Rotato. We have a couple of much loved tattie spots in our city, in the shape of The Baked Potato Shop and Tempting Tattie, but I thought Rotato to be a little better than both, not least because their smart basement premises are rather natty. I’d happily pop back, and would recommend it to you, too.
