I am on a good run with burgers, at the moment, after long despairing that our fair city couldn’t come up with a burger to match our wonderful local produce. Today’s visit to the Greenmantle came hot on the heels of the burger excellence at Nobles, with their tremendous bunny burger, and a more than respectable effort from Madogs.
The Greenmantle is a traditional pub on the corner of Nicolson Street and West Crosscauseway. The interior is dominated by warm dark wood. Bar service is friendly and welcoming.
I’d noticed their sign for Puddledub buffalo burgers, about which MJ had told me just a few days before, so thought I should pay it a visit.
Their “burger of the week” was a “French connection” featuring a camembert and onion marmalade topping. That sounded good to me. If I’d been in the mood for a beer, I could have taken advantage of their beer and burger weekday deal for £10. It’s a shame I wasn’t as their selection of beers and ales was quite impressive.
With my order placed at the bar, it was just a few minutes before I was presented with a smart looking burger and plenty of tasty looking fries.
The fries proved to be very good, but the burger was the star of the show. Chunky, meaty and packed with flavour, it was right up there with the Nobles bunny burger as the best I’ve sampled in the city. The red onion marmalade was excellent, too. I was a very contented and full chap, by the time I’d cleared the plate.
So overall, I was very impressed by the burger delights on offer at the Greenmantle. The other helpful thing to note is that they serve their entire menu until midnight, which is excellent news for those in need of a hearty feed towards the end of the night. I often bemoan the lack of quality dining opportunities past 10pm, so am delighted to add this place to the depressingly short list of options. I’d heartily recommend that you pay it a visit, at your earliest convenience.
