February 17, 2013 Sandwich, soup, Southside, Take Away 3 Comments

MJ sent me on a wild lunchtime goose-chase, today. I was supposed to try somewhere new called “Bah! Get Stuffed”. Of course, maybe I misunderstood the tenor of her message…

Anyhoo, I couldn’t spot the place, as I walked up Clerk Street, so popped in to Bonnington’s, instead.

A busy place, with a small amount of café seating and a thriving takeaway counter, they offered a wide selection of lunchtime options, with a well-stocked deli counter and a range of pre-made items on their shelves.

I spotted a meatball sandwich that looked a perfect candidate for toasting, to go with their soup of the day, which was mushroom.

The counter staff are very friendly, and have an excellent rapport with the regular customers, of which there seemed to be many.

My toasted sandwich took a minute or two, but soon enough I was on my way down the road.

Meatball sandwich

The food proved to be a bit of a mixed bag. The soup looked good, but failed on the taste test. Although it packed a nice amount of freshly prepared chunks of mushroom, the broth was thin, light on mushroom flavour, and totally under-seasoned. It was a disappointing effort.

The sandwich, on the other hand, was extremely good. The tomato sauce, which brought the meat, cheese, and veggie items together, was absolutely first rate. This made for satisfying mouthfuls of goodness.

So overall, I found Bonnington’s to be “hit and miss”. The soup was a let down, but the toasted meatball sandwich was great. I’d happily pop back, as the welcome was warm, but next time I’ll choose something other than their soup to match with one of their excellent sandwiches.
