On the Roll

I was derailed in my bid for lunchtime bratwurst glory, the other day, by my impromptu trip to Royal Spice. Not even a fine veil of rain, one of my least favourite of all rain phenomena, could not dissuade me from completion of the task today, though.

Cart

Offering a simple selection of sausages, On the Roll is a quaint little bratwurst cart, located on South Bridge (although presumably apt to moving around various city locations). On today’s visit, I opted for the bratwurst XL, which was an extra large item, indeed. It was entirely too lengthy for the freshly warmed soft bun, into which it was thrust, once grilled, for example.

The chatty and extremely friendly stall owner offered a range of topping suggestions, from which I opted for a spicy tomato sauce, and fried onions.

Once the fully dressed item had been wrapped up for safe carriage back to the office, I was on my way down the road, in anticipation of the meaty treats that awaited me.

Bratwurst XL

I’m not a particular connoisseur of these items, but I was very pleased with what I ate. The sausage was a juicily meaty mouthful and the condiments added further depth and character to each bite. More work could have been done to elevate the bun to something beyond a handle, though, so that’s an area for improvement.

So overall, I’m glad that I finally made it along to On the Roll. The welcome was warm, and the bratwurst on offer was satisfying. It’s very much the kind of thing that you’ll be sampling, over the coming weeks, at various Christmas markets, I imagine. If the mood strikes you at other times of the year, pop along to South Bridge for a good fix of German sausage goodness.
